Momordica charantia, known in Ayurveda as Karavellaka, is classified under Tikta Skandha Dravyas (bitter-tasting) due to its intense bitterness, traditionally associated with supporting the body’s natural cleansing processes and metabolic wellness. Karavellaka has been traditionally used as both Ahara (food) and Aushadha (plant medicine). Traditionally , cooked bitter gourd was consumed as a part of diet to support metabolic balance, especially during Kapha and Pitta-dominant seasons.
