PHYTOCHEMISTRY

The Phytochemistry Division is the cornerstone of Sabinsa’s R&D organization, with primary responsibility for developing and optimizing extraction processes that yield standardized botanical extracts from carefully selected natural sources. The team specializes in the identification, isolation, and characterization of bioactive compounds, and has developed and commercialized a broad portfolio of standardized phytoextracts for nutraceutical, cosmeceutical, and nutricosmetic applications. Several of Sabinsa’s innovative products were conceived in these laboratories and have since been successfully commercialized.

The laboratory is equipped with advanced analytical instrumentation, including a Nikon Eclipse Ci microscope with a Nikon DS-Ri2 digital camera, as well as a comprehensive suite of research equipment supporting rigorous phytochemical analysis. The division collaborates closely with Sabinsa’s Pharmacognosy Department, which authenticates botanical raw materials through detailed morphological and microscopic evaluation to ensure quality, identity, and consistency throughout the supply chain.

SYNTHETIC CHEMISTRY

The Synthetic Chemistry Department is dedicated to the discovery and development of novel bioactive molecules for pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and cosmetic applications. Its research encompasses a diverse range of compounds, including peptides, carbohydrates, natural products, peptide–natural product hybrids, chiral molecules, analytical reference standards, and other specialty chemicals, with ongoing additions expanding the Sami-Sabinsa’s portfolio.

Beyond molecular discovery, the department develops efficient, scalable, and environmentally responsible synthetic processes. Scientists continually optimize synthetic routes to improve manufacturing efficiency, reduce production costs, and support sustainable scale-up from laboratory to pilot and commercial production. The department’s research excellence is reflected in its extensive portfolio of scientific publications and patents.

The team also provides custom synthesis services for naturally derived compounds, metabolites, and other organic molecules to support pharmaceutical research, analytical applications, and biophysical studies. Through collaborations with leading research institutes, universities, and industry partners in India and around the world, the department contributes its expertise to advancing scientific innovation across multiple disciplines.

TISSUE CULTURE

The Plant Tissue Culture Division focuses on the micropropagation of high-performing plant varieties with significant bioactive potential, as well as the conservation and propagation of select rare and valuable botanical species using advanced tissue culture techniques.

The division’s development process encompasses four key stages:

  1. Identifying and selecting high-yielding plant varieties
  2. Rapidly multiplying elite plants through tissue culture technology
  3. Conducting field trials to evaluate plant performance and consistency
  4. Supplying high-quality planting material to contract farmers for large-scale commercial cultivation

To date, the division has successfully propagated important botanical species including Coleus forskohlii, Curcuma longa (turmeric), and Allium sativum (garlic). Ongoing research includes the development of callus culture systems for the production of valuable secondary metabolites, supporting sustainable cultivation and long-term ingredient innovation.

AGRI-BIOTECHNOLOGY

The Agri-Biotechnology Division is dedicated to identifying and developing elite genotypes of high-value botanical and aromatic plants while ensuring a reliable supply of superior planting material optimized for commercial cultivation in specific climatic regions. Its work spans germplasm selection, agronomic research, post-harvest technology development, and the transfer of these innovations to farmers through contract cultivation partnerships.

Guided by the principle that “cultivation leads to conservation,” the team promotes sustainable agriculture by reducing dependence on wild plant populations. Sami-Sabinsa pioneered the large-scale commercial cultivation of Coleus forskohlii across thousands of acres in India, followed by successful cultivation programs for turmeric (Curcuma longa), amla (Phyllanthus emblica), tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), and other botanicals. The successful transition of Coleus forskohlii from wild harvesting to cultivated production has helped ensure the long-term sustainability and conservation of this valuable resource.

The division also prioritizes the development of concentrated, science-backed botanical extracts for nutritional applications, and has developed modified hydroponic techniques to naturally enhance crop micronutrient content, including iron- and zinc-enriched green gram and selenium-enriched garlic. These advances have been successfully translated into commercially available products.

SUPER CRITICAL FLUID EXTRACTION (SCFE)

The Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SCFE) Division pioneered the commercialization of India’s first domestically developed SCFE technology, created in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay). The facility uses supercritical carbon dioxide (CO₂) as a clean solvent for the efficient extraction of high-value natural compounds, with a current processing capacity of approximately 45 metric tons of raw material per month. A dedicated pilot plant supports process optimization and validation prior to commercial-scale production.

The division’s R&D focus spans process development, scale-up, quality enhancement, and cost optimization, and has yielded a broad range of herbal extracts, botanical extracts, and spice oleoresins supplied to domestic and international markets.

Key advantages of supercritical CO₂ extraction:

  • Operates at relatively mild temperatures, preserving heat-sensitive bioactive compounds
  • Uses GRAS-designated CO₂, suitable for food, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical applications
  • Leaves no residual solvents, producing cleaner, higher-purity extracts
  • Non-toxic, non-flammable, and environmentally friendly
  • Readily available, recyclable, and inert toward most materials

FORMULATION R&D

The Formulation R&D Division transforms innovative bioactive ingredients into market-ready products across the nutraceutical, cosmeceutical, nutricosmetic, food, and beverage sectors. Combining scientific expertise with formulation technology, the team develops application-specific solutions that maximize the functionality, stability, and consumer appeal of each compound.

Work is organized across three areas:

  • Nutraceutical and Nutricosmetic Formulations
  • Cosmetic and Personal Care Formulations
  • Functional Food and Beverage Formulations

The division develops prototype formulations across a broad range of dosage and delivery formats — solids, liquids, and semi-solids — including dietary supplements, functional foods and beverages, cosmetics, and personal care products. Through formulation development, optimization, and proof-of-concept prototyping, the team provides a strong technical foundation for product commercialization and supports the translation of science into market-ready solutions.
