Traditional Uses
Fenugreek seeds, known as Methika (Trigonella foenum-graecum), have been valued in Ayurveda for centuries as both a nourishing food and a therapeutic herb (Aahara-Aushadha). Widely used in traditional home remedies, fenugreek is recognized for supporting healthy digestion, metabolism, and overall vitality. Fenugreek has also been incorporated into seasonal cleansing practices to help ama (metabolic toxins) and has long played a role in traditional fermentation methods.
In Ayurveda, fenugreek is described as having a bitter (Tikta) and slightly pungent (Katu) taste, a warming nature (Ushna Virya), and a pungent post-digestive effect (Katu Vipaka). Fenugreek supports digestion (Deepana), gentle cleansing (Shodhana), and maintains the balance of Vata and Kapha doshas. Its light (Laghu) and dry (Ruksha) qualities support Lekhana (body’s natural cleansing processes), while soaking or cooking adds slight oily &rich (Snigdha).
