Traditional Uses
Fenugreek seeds, known as ‘Methika’ (Trigonella foenum-graecum), have been used for centuries in Ayurveda as both a functional food and a herbal ingredient (Aahara-Aushadha). A staple in traditional home remedies, valued for supporting healthy digestion, metabolism, and vitality. It has also been used in seasonal cleansing practices to reduce ama (toxins) and in fermentation traditions.
In Ayurveda, fenugreek is described as having a bitter (Tikta) and slightly pungent (Katu) taste, a warming nature (Ushna Virya), and a pungent post-digestive effect (Katu Vipaka). Fenugreek supports digestion (Deepana), gentle cleansing (Shodhana), and maintain balance of Vata and Kapha doshas. Its light (Laghu) and dry (Ruksha) qualities promote Lekhana (toxin-scraping); while soaking or cooking adds slight unctuousness (Snigdha).
