Traditional Uses
Pterocarpus marsupium, commonly known as ‘Vijaysar’ in Ayurveda, is an ancient, revered medicinal tree used for centuries to manage metabolic disorders, particularly the diabetic condition ‘Madhu-meha’ (type II diabetes mellitus). Traditionally, the wooden pieces of the tree were soaked in water overnight, then filtered and consumed by diabetic individuals. This practice was further improved by preparing tumblers carved from the wood of Pterocarpus marsupium in which water was stored overnight and consumed the following day.
Vijaysar has a bitter and astringent taste, possessing light and dry qualities with cold potency and resulting in a pungent effect after digestion. This herb is used as medhohara (reducing fat accumulation), rasayana (rejuvenation) and keshya (promoting hair health), also balancing kapha and pitta doshas. Vijaysar is mentioned in classical Ayurvedic texts, particularly under prameha chikitsa, mainly for supporting the treatment of urinary and metabolic disorders.

pTeroSol® is a water-soluble extract obtained from the heartwood of Indian Kino (Pterocarpus marsupium), standardized to contain 5% C-glycosides (as Pterocarposide and Sabioside), which supports normal blood sugar levels.
Aromatic and heteroaromatic compounds feature a glucose moiety that binds the aglycone through a carbon-carbon bond, enhancing glycosidic bond stability. They are rapidly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract without modification and are effective SGLT2 inhibitors.
Supplementation with Pterocarpus extract in clinical trials has been proven to help maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Clinical studies results have shown that Pterocarpus extract controlled both fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels in subjects with type 2 diabetes, formerly called ‘non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus’ (NIDDM). Also, its blood glucose-lowering efficacy is comparable with a standard anti-diabetic agent such as Tolbutamide.
