Traditional Uses
Oroxylum indicum, known as ‘Shyonaka’ in Ayurveda has been utilized in various traditional medicinal preparations to support immune function, to support digestion and appetite, to reduce thirst, to ease nasal irritations etc. The use of bark is well-known in Ayurveda and other folk remedies in conditions ranging from quelling fevers to supporting respiratory health. It is also used as a tonic and is part of the well-known Ayurvedic herbal formulations. In other local traditions the bark is described as acrid, bitter, pungent, and astringent, has been used to support regular bowel movement, improve healthy sexual urge, relieve bronchitis, reduce intestinal worms, alleviate vomiting, dysentery, and inflammation.
