Traditional Uses
Marigold (Tagetes erecta L.), known in Ayurveda as Jhaṇḍū or Sthūlapuṣpā, is believed to have originated in Central America and been cultivated there for religious, medicinal, and decorative purposes. The name “marigold” comes from “Mary’s gold,” referring to the Virgin Mary in Christian tradition.
Marigold has a long history of use in Ayurveda and is referenced in later texts such as the Raj Nighantu. Traditionally described as having bitter (tikta) and astringent (kashaya) tastes with a cooling nature, it is used to help support balance of Pitta and Kapha-Pitta according to Ayurvedic principles.

ZeaLutein® is a proprietary blend of naturally sourced 1% Zeaxanthin, 5% Lutein, and 2% Piperine derived from Tagetes erecta (Marigold), and Piper nigrum (Black pepper). It helps support vision health, provides antioxidant protection against free radicals, and supports normal eye function and macular health as part of a healthy lifestyle.
The ratio of Zeaxanthin to Lutein in ZeaLutein is 1:5, which is the exact concentration naturally found in human plasma and the eye’s macula.
Lutein and zeaxanthin are unique xanthophyll carotenoids with hydroxyl groups that make them more hydrophilic, and zeaxanthin is a stereoisomer of lutein with a slightly different double-bond position. These structural differences may influence their roles in the retina, where lutein is linked more with the peripheral retina and rods, and zeaxanthin with the macula’s cones. Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids with antioxidant activity that help support eye health by helping protect against oxidative stress and supporting the eye’s natural blue-light filtering functions, helping maintain normal vision.
The inclusion of piperine improves the bioavailability of the carotenoids, helping your body absorb them more efficiently.
The recommended daily dose of ZeaLutein® is 100 – 125 mg per day.
